I have true and accurate information to add to the Sytsma family tree. Jeremy Thomas Sytsma was my brother.

Admin reply: Hello, fourth cousin! It's very nice to hear from you. I met your grandmother and some of your other relatives at a Collver Family Reunion some years back. I will send a direct email to you very soon.

Hello Kirsty, thank you for the information which is wonderful.
Regarding Henry Warnken and Edith Naomi Harris they had a son, the eldest, (who my husband's line comes from). His name was Heinrich Roy Warnken born 1891 at Broken Hill N.S.W. Australia. He married Grace Clayton in Tasmania 1916. I understand there were 3 sons and a daughter altogether, 3 of the children were born in South Australia.
I have been doing some 'sleuthing' regarding the family and, if I am able to help you in some small way I shall.
May I ask which side of the family are you from?
Warm Regards
Annette Warnken wife to Russell-grandson to Heinrich Roy (also known as Henry) Warnken.

Admin reply: Hello, Annette --

It's very nice to hear from you. Your husband is my 10th cousin. Our mutual ancestors go way back up the tree to our 10th great-grandparents, Deacon Edmund Rice and his wife, Thomasina Frost. Deacon Rice was born in England, but was one of the early settlers in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. There's been lots of research done on the Rice family in colonial America.

Your husband's branch is a little unusual in that his ancestor, Charles Harris, ended up in Australia. My line of Rices stayed in America.

I don't know how much help I can be with your branch of the family, but I will contact you by direct email soon.

cheers,

Dear Ms Haining, I was delighted to discover your site as I am researching the incidences of Gaelic names in the Carrick region of South Ayrshire, Scotland. Grizel Ncandelish is extremely interesting to me as she has the Gaelic form Nic (daughter of) and not the more common, and illogical Mac (son of).

I found her marriage record on Scotland's people but wonder if you can give me your sources for the variations in spelling her name. I am in touch with Scotland's people to discuss improving their search engine.

But Grizel is very important as she died at Dunure (definite source needed there!) which would make her the least-known native Gaelic speaker in Carrick.

I'm preparing an academic paper hence the need for verifiable sources.

Many thanks, James Brown, MSc, FSA Scot

Admin reply: Hi, James —

Thanks for visiting my website.

The variations in the spelling for Grizel's name came from the various marriage and birth records in the OPR records, as transcribed by FamilySearch. At the time I did this research, it was before there was easy access to the listings on ScotlandsPeople. I did not pull the actual images from ScotlandsPeople to verify that names had been correctly transcribed; I only made note of the variations in spelling on her surname (and her Christian name).

Here is the marriage record:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XT23-ZNT

Best wishes in your research!

Hi Kirsty,
I am trying to trace info on a Mrs J H McCracken who appears on John Haining's Canadian Immigration Declaration dated 22 Sep 1922. John is the son of Thomas Goldie Haining, my 1st cousin 3x removed, and Mary Agnes Hyslop. Mrs McCracken is recorded on the declaration as being John's aunt. She apparently payed for his ticket and her address 647 Machleary Street, Nanaimo was declared to be his final destination. For the life of me i can't work out who she is. Can you help?
Cheers Chris

Hello Kirsty
Wow what a lot of work you have done. I have only recently decided to research my father's war service history. My father John Low Haining was born in Glasgow 1925 and as you recorded died in Australia in 1992. In your website you were able to state that dad was in The Gap in 1977 - which was true - how on earth did you know that? I had a fairly fractured relationship with my father and he died without talking at all about his immediate family - I have learnt more tonight than I have ever known. Thank you for all your patience, persistence and sheer hard yakka (Australianism). How are we related? Look forward to hearing from you. :!cry:

Admin reply: Hi, Alison!

It's very nice to hear from you. We are very distantly related... half-sixth cousins. You have to go pretty far up the Haining tree to find our common ancestors. Once it gets that high up the tree, some of the connections become more theoretical and difficult to prove. Our earliest common ancestor is James Haining, who lived in New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland in the mid- to late 1700s. I'm not sure who his father really is, although I've connected him to a John Haining for the time being.

At any rate, what I know of your branch of Hainings comes through research. The 1977 residence is from tax rolls. And it helped that I found burial/cremation information for him.

I will send a direct email to you as soon as I'm able.

Kirsty Haining

Hi Kirsty,

You have done an outstanding job researching and compiling information on the family! Thanks for sharing, your research is helpful!

I'm related to Ray Van Auken, suppose he's my great Grand uncle...it gets so confusing. Ray had a sister named Theo E. Van Auken (Theo isn't short for anything, it was just Theo). Theo married three times and had one child. I'm working on the Van Auken side of the family here in Michigan, but I thought that I would let you know that Ray's daughter, Muriel E., is often misspelled as Merle. Muriel had some connections here to Detroit, perhaps with Theo and the other Van Auken's here in Michigan. Muriel and her daughter Diane E. were killed in an auto accident in Ohio on September 6, 1949. The two are buried at Grand Lawn in Detroit. Muriel was married to Edward Hoffman, Jr.

Thanks again for your dedication and sharing your research. I'm happy to send you what I have on the Van Auken's.

Admin reply: Hi, Kelsey --

Thanks for stopping by my website. My connection to the Van Aukens comes from the other side of the tree (through the wife's family), so I do not have any research on Ray's family. I haven't been able to find any official records yet that prove the spelling of Merle/Muriel's name. She was listed as "Muriel" in the Ohio death records transcription, but as "Merle" in the 1930 census.

Best of luck with your family research!

It's nice to meet you also! There are so many errors in a lot of information on my great grandparents. I knew Lacy but Stuart died when I was just a baby. A lot of sites about the Gwin family mention Lacy and her twin,Lula, as one person by the name of Lilod. Stuart's birthday varies on some sites but it is October 25, which is also mine. Some sites also mention a daughter named Rosie of which there was no such person. If you ever need any information, I will be glad to help you as I am very familiar with this branch of the family. Thanks for correcting that information! ;)
