Hi Kristy,

Just for the heck of it, I put my great grandmother's name into the internet and it came up! Minnie DeRoos. You have her daughter (my grandmother) listed as Vera (I think). It's actually VEORA. Her name was Julia Veora DeRoos, but she went by Veora. I found another genealogy online that is incorrect in this respect as well. I think theirs said Vena - but I was unable to contact them.

Minnie was a nurse in South Bend. Around 1920, the doctors in the town asked her if she would open her home to women giving birth, so she was the midwife in South Bend.

I have a photo of Minnie's husband, Charles, with his daughter, Veora, and my Dad, Gerald DeRoos Sowers in a boat when my Dad was a little boy - maybe 7. That would've been about 1941.

Best,
Liz

Admin reply: Hi, Liz —

The reason your grandmother's name was spelled as "Julia Vera" (instead of Julia Veora) is because that's how it was spelled on the 1920 census form. Obviously, such spelling mistakes are common — but it's also important to preserve what the original document said. If there had been an entry for your grandmother in my tree, her main name would have made the correct spelling obvious. But as it is, I'm only tracking the descendants of your great-uncle Charles.

I have a copy of your Charles and Minnie's marriage license and certificate. Would you be interested in those?

Thanks for visiting my website.

cheers,
Kirsty

Hi, Rasselas Reynolds was a great great uncle. His younger brother Almos was my great grandfather. Thanks for putting the web page and info together!

I plan to stop by Walla Walla one of the days to visit some grave sites and view some other Reynolds landmarks or sites.

Best wishes, Steve

Admin reply: Hi, Steve —

I'm glad my website was of interest to you. Obviously, your great-great uncle is at the edge of my tree since he's the father-in-law of one of my relatives. But we still do share some cousins in common — all the descendants of Eleanor Virginia Powell and John Reid Carmichael.

Nice to hear from you! I didn't know that Jane had a daughter named Mary, but I've been doing some digging since you signed my guest book. I've seen a copy of Mary's book of poetry now.

I would love to hear more about your descent from Mary, so I will contact you directly.

Thanks for visiting!

Your information on the descendents of George Washington Huffman, son of Robert Marion Huffman who died and is buried at Andersonville, GA. POW Camp is incorrect.family GW Huffman died and is buried in Grand Bay, AL. and his wife, Mary Alice Hamilton was born and died in Grand Bay, NOT Shelby Co., IL. I am married to their granddaughter. If you would like more detailed info., contact me through e-mail. As I write this, I am sitting in on the very site where GW Huffman lived and died. Our second home is built on the exact site of GW's home.

Admin reply: Hi, Mack —

In my defense, my information on George Washington Huffman and his wife is not incorrect, so much as INCOMPLETE. I actually said that Mary was born in "prob(ably) Shelby County, IL." That means that I didn't know where she was born, but I guessed it MIGHT be the same location as her husband. Obviously, the guess turned out to be wrong.

I am interested in better information, however, so I will contact you by direct email.

Thanks for stopping by!

cheers,
Kirsty :!cool:

Kirsty,

Your page is amazing and very detailed. I wish I had enough information about my family to be able to do this. Ray Clarida was my grandfather, but he passed away before I was born. I am the son of Mary L Payne that was misspelled as Marey Clarido in the census. My mom's side of the family is all a mystery and since my mom has also passed away it makes it harder to find information. We knew about all the conflicting birth information. Thank you for providing more information then we ever had before. Now maybe I will be able to find out more and if there is any more that you know please let me know.

Thank you

Travis

Admin reply: Hi, Travis! My connection is through your mother's half brother's first wife, which is why your mother doesn't appear in my tree (other than in the 1940 census enumeration for Ray Clarida). I do, however, have some additional details on Ray's parents, as well as about Ray's second wife, your grandmother. I will send the information to you by direct email. Thanks for visiting my website! cheers, Kirsty Haining :!cool:

I am working on a book about the coal miners on the Colinda who set out in 1853 for the coal mines in Nanaimo BC with the Hudson's Bay Company but got off the ship in Chile. Many were hired there. I have been trying to find out if William Bowman was on the ship along with his mother who had married William Sutherland after her husband's death. His younger sister, Helen, was also with them, but William was never mentioned in the Surgeon's Journal though the others were. I have also found them in the 1851 Census and would be happy to share what I have found with you. I would love to know where they ended up as I have not been able to trace them in Chilean records.

Judy

Admin reply: Hi, Judy —

Other than my own direct line, what I know of my Bowman relatives has come through research. Your message was the first I have heard of the Colinda and the ship's mutiny in Chile. I did just see a message thread where it was mentioned that William Bowman was with the group, although of course his fate is not mentioned. I am interested in hearing more from you as I was not able to find this family in the 1851 census. I will email you soon.

cheers,
