Hi Kirsty,

This morning I decided out of the blue to google the name of a person I had never met and knew pretty much nothing about. My maternal grandfather Ernest Gray. Where this took me has blown me away. Today I have discovered more about my maternal ancestors than I have ever known.
My mother Frances Elizabeth Jones (nee Gray) is the daughter of Edna Elizabeth Smith Haining.
If I can supply further information on this branch of the Haining descendants, please let me know. I also have some pictures.

It's nice to make your acquaintance. I live In Poulsbo, so not too far from you if you are truly in Seattle. If you are related to Simeon Payne that would make us distance cousins (I think) since he is my 4th great grandfather.

I'm researching my 3rd great grandfather John Ellis Payne. I think you have his mother as Mary Elizabeth Richardson, but I do not believe that is the case. John Ellis Payne was born in 1828 to Simeon Payne and unknown mother. Simeon didn't marry Mary Elizabeth Richardson until 1832. I'm not sure if John Ellis Payne's mother died in childbirth or thereafter. Of course I have no evidence of any of this other than the dates do not match up to when John Ellis Payne was born and the year Simeon married Mary Elizabeth Richardson.

You are correct. I also do not believe that John is the son of Mary Elizabeth Richardson, which is why I had the marriage date AFTER his birth date. I suppose I took a bit of a shortcut with him. When a biological parent is unknown, and the child is raised by the step-parent, you'll still often see the child listed as if he or she is a biological child of that family — that's the shortcut. I suppose I wasn't quite as precise with John because he's at the edge of my tree and I'm not really researching him or his descendants. You see, I have relatives that have several intermarriages with SOME of the children of Simeon Payne and Mary Elizabeth Richardson. That's why I more-or-less included the entire family in my tree.

I'm sorry if my shortcut has caused confusion or if it's perpetuating mistaken information. I've added a note to John's record in my family tree to make his parentagee clearer. You'll be able to see that note the next time I update my website.

Delighted to see photo you have of Rachel Bond. All I can say is that her boys have the "Murdoch" ears. She was my grandfather's aunt. Her brother John Murdoch was my grandfather's father.
She had a son George Brown Bond who died 15th May 1918 age 4. He is buried alongside his grandfather John Murdoch. I would be happy to forward Mudoch/Percy info if you require any.

My mother's father was Byron Nelson Bean(e). He was born in 1894 and eventually went on to be the Sheriff and Mayor in Metropolis, Illinois. He lived with us when I was a child and eventually went back the Metropolis where he died. I know very little about his family background as my mother always said he had a falling out with them and added an "e" to the end of his name and began using the nickname Barney. He appears to be on your website. If you have any additional information on the family please let me.

If Byron changed the spelling of his last name, and then also changed to using a nickname, it's no wonder I had trouble figuring out what happened to him!

Unfortunately, I don't have any first-hand knowledge of Barney's family situation at all. What I do know, I've learned through census and records research.

If there was trouble with his family, it likely had to do with the Bean side of the family, rather than with Barney's maternal side (which is the side we connect on). I know his mother died when he was still a young man, and his maternal grandparents died long before Byron was even born. He may have had some contact with his maternal aunts, uncles and cousins, but I think Leah moved away from where her siblings lived, too.

At any rate, I'm very glad to hear from you! We are 4th cousins... your Barney's maternal grandmother was the elder sister of my 2nd great-grandfather, Thomas Maglone. I will also email you directly, so that we can exchange other information of interest.

Sarah Clark, daughter of John Bell Clark and Caroline Jones, was my mother's cousin. I just got a copy of his death certificate and am puzzling over "panclysic" as the primary cause of death. Searching for the word brought up your record and in the Google entry a mention of a "bullet." Please help me understand the connection. Was this the official way to gloss over his death as suicide?

The "Panclysic & Cerebral Hemmorage" cause of death came from a detailed family group record on the Clark-Williams website — if I recall correctly, the report was generated by Tom Clark II. For me the information comes secondhand. I haven't seen the death certificate image myself, and presumably "panclysic" is the best interpretation of bad handwriting.

I've always rather suspected, however, that the word really should be "paralytic" (which would make sense, paired with cerebral hemmorhage). With bad handwriting, "ra" could be read as "nc" and I suppose "paralysic" might have been an alternative archaic form of the adjective for paralysis. That's my theory, anyhow. Mind sending me a digital image of the death certificate, since you've gone to the trouble of getting it?

Btw, I answered an earlier email from you today on the Ancestry website.

P.S. The "bullet" in the google results is actually a bit of a red herring — it's referring to the bulleted text that follows the cause of death information. So you got formatting details mixed in with the actual text in the google hit.
